There isn't a ton of evidence linking listening whole lullabies directly to better sleep, but it does make newborns feel protected, secure, and quiet. Also, it's possible that the lullaby's calming effects come from the way in which it combines singing with rocking to send the listener off to dreamland (cue: Rock-a-Bye Baby). Babies remember the calming effects of rocking from their time in the womb, so it seems sense that they would seek for this activity after they were born. Dr. Harvey Karp recommends the 5 S's for improved sleep, and swinging is one of them. This natural soothing reaction acts as a "off switch" for weeping and a "on switch" for relaxation and sleep, and it is triggered by Baby's participation in the rhythmic movement. Even while lullabies are usually played at a calm, regular tempo, they still lack the monotony that helps Baby fall asleep quickly and easily.

Calming Sounds for Infants
It's not music at all, but rather white noise—a tried-and-true sleep-inducer—that will help Baby drift off to dreamland. To provide just one example, research published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood indicated that white noise was effective in putting eighty percent of infants to sleep within five minutes. Babies that are colicky tend to scream less and sleep more when exposed to white noise. This is due to the fact that white noise is eerily similar to the powerful rumbling noises that infants were exposed to while still in the womb. That's why the 5th S, "shushing" (also known as "white noise"), is so essential.

Your baby will find the white noise most comforting if it is continuous, repetitive, and of a low pitch, much like the sounds she heard when in the womb. (Waves, birdsong, and lullabies are all examples of inconsistent sounds that do not meet this criteria.) Some white noise generators are better than others. In fact, many of them don't even provide the beneficial low rumbly white noise that infants need to sleep properly. Try our award-winning SNOO bassinet, our SNOObear white noise lovey, or the pediatrician-designed SNOO sounds download for the greatest "music" for infant sleep. Your infant will learn to link white noise with the comfort of sleep in a matter of weeks if you use the right kind of white noise. (That's the sound I've come to know as "night-night," and I'm sure it means it's time for bed.) As infants age, they may better fall asleep and remain asleep with the aid of white noise, which can mask both external (loud TVs, passing trucks) and internal (other infants crying) noises (teething pain, mild cold).

Calming Sounds for Baby's Bedtime Routine
Even while music may not help newborns sleep on their own, lullabies are nonetheless a crucial part of most infants' nighttime routines. Within two weeks, parents who followed a three-step nighttime routine—including a bath, baby massage, and silent snuggling or singing a lullaby—saw a substantial decrease in their infant's or toddler's troublesome sleep habits, according to a research published in the journal Sleep. Researchers have shown that routines result in regular, stress-free bedtimes. With that in mind, it's a good idea to start preparing your kid for sleep about an hour before it's time to turn in by doing things like lowering the lights, shutting off devices, playing white noise, and participating in silent play. Sing some soothing songs around half an hour before sleep. Consistency is crucial for babies, so try singing the same song or songs at the conclusion of Baby's sleep ritual every night. It could help to make a simple "let's sleep" motion while you sing, such as bringing your hands together to make a pillow and laying your head on them.
